External surfaces face conditions that internal floors do not — rainfall, leaf litter, frost, algae, traffic film and grit residue. Pendulum testing of external paving captures how the surface performs in the conditions that matter, not just when freshly installed.
For external testing, we test wet as standard and discuss whether contamination by leaf litter, algae or de-icer residue is relevant to the assessment. Pendulum results vary substantially depending on what is on the surface, and a test conducted only on a swept-clean dry surface tells you very little about real-world risk.
Across our the South West external testing work, the most common issues we identify are: polished natural stone in entrance plazas, smooth pre-cast concrete units that have aged, painted line markings on external ramps, and metal access covers in pedestrian routes. Each has well-established remediation options if testing identifies them as a risk.
